At Bowcroft, the music program takes on a very hands-on approach as students explore and develop rhythmic, melodic and composition skills. With a multitude of instruments available in the classroom, students are able to analyse sounds, tap into their creativity, and learn to play as a band.

This year, our kindergarten and grade 1 students are discovering the unique timbres of unpitched instruments and how they can represent different characters and elements. Our grade 2/3 students are learning to play and compose simple rhythms and play xylophones. Our division 2 students are learning to play and compose more difficult rhythms individually and in groups. The grade 4 and 5 classes are focusing on creating amazing soundscapes with their body percussion, found sounds, and instruments, and the grade 5/6 and 6 classes are making fantastic music machines with unpitched instruments.

Choir Club Notice

Dear parents and guardians,

To accompany having our music program this year, I am very excited to also be running a division 2 choir club. In preparation for performing at school events, the goal of this choir will be to explore a variety of repertoire based on these events and the interests of the choir.

We will meet every Wednesday in the music room at lunch starting October 18. With rehearsal time being so limited, students will be expected to practice songs on their own time, too.

Having performance goals in mind, attending the rehearsals are important and attendance is expected, so students who miss two weeks in a row (unless special circumstances exist that are discussed with me) and/or engage in disruptive behaviour will no longer be welcome to participate in choir.

If interested, please cut and sign the bottom of this form and bring it to the music room (room 21) by October 5.

Spots will be open to the first 40 students to do so. If you have any questions, please feel free to reach me at kahou@cbe.ab.ca.

I look forward to making music with the division 2 choir!

Sincerely,
Ms. Hou
