Liebe Eltern, dear parents and guardians,

As the school year is drawing to an end, please pick up your child’s medication that you may have in the front office!

Sports Day:

We still need a couple more volunteers! If you have time, please sign up – even if it’s a class that is not your child’s class! It’s about running a station, not helping in your child’s classroom.

  • 9:10-9:30: Review Expectations and Map in classroom
  • 9:30-11:30: Sports Day Activities
  • 11:30-11:45 Return to Homerooms and Tally Points

Dress decorum:

At school, we want to dress for school – not the beach. That being said, please make sure that your child/ren do not wear:

  • short shorts
  • tank tops
  • spaghetti straps

Neither one is appropriate for school.

Staffing:

As you know, Ms. Hou (music) is moving back to Ontario. Frau Schafer is moving to Austria and Ms. Tessier is moving to … New Zealand! So excited for them, so sad for us.

Ms. Halvorson, Ms. Buckner, Ms. Dietrich and Ms. Tran have been successful in applying out. They will join new schools in the fall. Congratulations to them!  I would like to take this opportunity to express my gratitude to all of them. They have served the Bowcroft community for many years. They have shared their talents and passion for teaching your child/ren. Their unwavering dedication to teaching and supporting some of our most vulnerable and complex students shone through their daily work. They will be missed. Please make sure to thank them!

As a result, Ms. Smith and myself have been interviewing non-stop.

So far, we have hired:

  • the two CCT Education assistants (Ms. Kayla Ferguson and Mrs. Nurdane Akcay)
  • the CCT teacher (Ms. Suzanne Oberhamer)
  • a new German teacher (Herr Hansen)
  • another German teacher: Herr Kass
  • Ms. Sarah Walker for the community grade 1
  • Ms. Jen Pickrell for the community grade 2/3
  • a new music teacher (Ms. Sonia Oppenheim)  and
  • Ms. Rowley, while covering Ms. Ferzacca’s maternity leave this year, she will enjoy a probationary contract with us for next year
  • Ms. Ferzacca is returning from her maternity leave and will return to grade 2/3.

Here are some of their intro letters for you:

Hallo liebe Bowcroft-Gemeinschaft,

Herr Hansen

Hello Bowcroft community!

My name is Tristen Hansen (Herr Hansen), and I am thrilled to be joining Bowcroft school as  the German Grade 2/3  teacher for next year.

I am a recent University of Calgary Graduate who has mainly worked in French Immersion. My first degree was in Linguistics where I learned German and Norwegian, while getting the chance to study in both Germany and Norway for 6 months each.

I love languages so if you can speak German, French or Norwegian, come by anytime for a chat as I would love the practice.

I am incredibly excited to help guide young learners on their journey towards bilingualism. Learning a language opens doors to new cultures, experiences, and ways of understanding the world around us.

Outside of teaching, I love spending as much time as I can outside camping or hiking with my fiancée and my two Mini Australian Shepherds. I also have a passion for music where I can play the saxophone and guitar.

I look forward to meeting you all next year and helping contribute to the Bowcroft family.

Herzliche Grüße,

Herr Hansen

Our new music teacher:

Hello Bowcroft families,

My name is Ms. Sonia Oppenheim, and I am excited to be joining Bowcroft as the Music Teacher for the 2026–2027 school year. Music has been a lifelong passion of mine, and I feel incredibly fortunate to share that passion with students. I hold two degrees from the University of Alberta in Music and Elementary Education, and I have had the joy of working in both Edmonton and Calgary at a variety of schools over the past decade as both a classroom teacher and music teacher. As a lifelong choral singer and former member of Pro Coro Canada, one of Canada's professional choirs, choral music holds a special place in my heart.

In our music classes, students will have opportunities to sing, move, play instruments, create, and explore music from a variety of cultures and traditions. My goal is to help every child build confidence, creativity, and a love of music while contributing to the strong sense of community that makes Bowcroft such a special place to learn.

I look forward to making music with your children in the fall!

Community grade 1, Ms. Sarah Walker:

Hello Bowcroft families!

My name is Sarah Walker, and I am excited to be joining the Bowcroft School community this upcoming school year, teaching grade 1. I am entering my third year of teaching and am passionate about creating a welcoming classroom where students feel seen, supported, and excited to learn.

Outside of school, I enjoy going on adventures with my English Cocker Spaniel Tilly, as well as being in the kitchen cooking and baking!

I am looking forward to meeting the students, staff, and families at Bowcroft and becoming part of the community!

Warm Regards,
Meike Thomsen, principal/Schulleiterin
