Dear Parents and Guardians,
Grade 6 Students and Parents: Please mark your calendars for this important Open House and student presentation about Late French immersion presentation on Jan 30 to all grade 6 students, Open House on Feb 6 at Branton, JH.
Having French opens doors when applying for federal job opportunities as well as scholarships for post-secondary education. If you want to challenge your student, then this is the perfect opportunity!
It is hard to believe that next week is the last week before winter break. I hope you are planning on attending the winter concert. Ms. Hou and all the students have been practicing hard to provide you with the most amazing performance! Please park in the neighborhood and walk to school to attend the concert. Doors will open at 5:45PM, the same time when all choir students are expected to arrive at school and meet in the music room. Upon arrival, students will go to their homerooms, where their teacher will supervise them. Parents will go straight into the gym and find seating.
If you want to volunteer for a day or two during the week-long field trips and you have NOT done your police clearance, please stop by BEFORE the winter break. At the moment, they take up to a month, especially with the holidays.
Emotions always run high at this point of the year as it is a stressful time for many. Financial stress of ‘having’ to buy gifts, of meeting ‘expectations’. As a child, my sister and I received three gifts each: one book, one piece of clothing, one toy. That was it. What I remember most about the holidays were not the gifts. What I remember is: the baking with my mom leading up to Christmas. Going into the forest with my dad to cut the tree – the weekend before Christmas as it had to be as fresh as possible on December 24. Decorating the tree with my sister – with REAL CANDLES! Yes, each year, some homes did burn down because of them. To avoid this, families would have a bucket of water close by. I remember the smell of the tree and candles, the music, the games we played, the awe and wonder. Time with family is priceless. Hence, it’s hard for those of us who are far, far away from our loved ones. If you are far away from your loved ones, I hope that you have dear friends to spend these days with.
Looking forward to welcoming you next week to the winter concert.
Warm regards,
Meike Thomsen, Principal
