Liebe Eltern, dear parents and guardians

Last week, the grade 2/3 classes from Frau Hauck and Mr. Benty practiced in real life what they had been learning about in mathematics. They had a Market. Real things for sale for real money. Parents were excited to visit and spend money and other classes from the school were invited and many attended. The amount of nickels, dimes, quarters, loonies, toonies and $5 bills handled that day was incredible. The happy energy in room 13 was palpable. At the end of the day, all the students (and teachers) looked exhausted! Frau Hauck has already shared some of her reflections in how to make it even BETTER next year. It was a very successful day!

Our mural is approved! Thank you, Brit Hartz, for spearheading this initiative and Dylan Morley-Johnson for painting the mural and donating your talent and time to do so. It’s going to be beautiful. Please check it out:

An incredibly busy week has come to an end. Our postings have opened and closed and we have interviewed many and hired a number of new and amazing teachers. Next week, you will learn more about them. This week, we are able to introduce one new staff member already.

Medicine: Some students have epipens or medication in the office. Please come and pick up the your supplies by Thursday at 12:45pm when it’s dismissal time. Thank you!

Below, you will find the introductory letter of Jillian Hickling, our new grade 6 English and Humanities teacher as well as our new Learning Leader around literacy.

Hello Bowcroft Families.

My name is Jill Hickling and I will be your Grade 6 English Language Arts and Social Studies teacher for the 2024-2025 school year.  I will be also be taking the role of Learning Leader for Language Arts for Bowcroft School.

I am the youngest of two children who were both born and raised in Calgary.  While living in Calgary, I have come to love hiking, being in the mountains and the great outdoors.  The scenery and experiences around Calgary have been some of the places that I have done my best thinking, learning and reflecting. I love sitting on a mountain top watching the sun rise, reading a book and reflecting on the moments in the week.  Running is another passion I have cultivated later in my life.  I am a lifelong learner who cannot wait to meet you, the students and families that I will be working with this year.

My family now consists of three children whom I am immensely proud of.  I have a 17-year-old daughter, who graduated from Bowness High School this year.  She has a dream of becoming a paramedic. Next is my middle daughter who is going into grade 11.  She is a football playing, fun loving student and athlete.  Her dream is to be a trauma psychologist focusing on children who are in high stress divorce and custody situations.  Lastly, I have a son who is going into grade 10 next year.  He has a passion for football, yet is an athlete and lover of all sports.  Benjamin is learning who he is and the person he was created to be.  All three of my children have been blessed with learning challenges and two of them have ADHD.  The journey my family has been on has deepened my passion for advocating for children who struggle to learn in the mainstream of our school system.  My classroom is a safe place for all students and parents to come and take a breath, talk out frustrations, share a laugh and find success. My door is always open to build a strong relationship between home, school, parent, teacher and child.

My teaching career started 27 years ago with the CBE. I believe in the value and strength of students’ voice. Striving to model and teach children to build community and advocate for what each need to learn and grow is a valued experience all children will have in my classroom.  In my career, I have worked in the private sector of education, where I worked in both religious and cultural foundation schools.  In these experiences, I have worked to bring all perspectives, learning styles and opinions together in a united and forward-thinking manner.  I understand the importance of a strong school identity where each child is valued and seen as a critical member of the learning team and school identity.

My teaching style is based on the model of I do, we do, you do.  Students see how actions are put into practice in my classroom. Coming along side each and helping students build their practice and knowledge in learning allows for collaboration and strong foundations.  Student voice, questioning and having a role in their learning drives the passion for lifelong learning.  Advancing my students into greatness, meeting high expectations and walking the learning together is my focus and goal.

I wish you all a fun, relaxing and well-deserved summer break.

Looking forward to meeting you in September.

Regards,

Jill Hickling

Warm regards,

Meike Thomsen, Principal
