Dear Parents and Guardians,
The Family Math Night runs from 6:00 to 7:30pm next week, Tuesday. We hope to see many of you. The Family Math Night will run in the gym. Ms. Tetz is leading this evening. You will play with many manipulatives, cards etc and you will learn many new games to play at home with your child/ren.
AGLEC (Alberta German Language Education Consortium), which I am chairing, meets every three months. Some exciting news for our German bilingual students is the following:
The GCAA (German Canadian Association in Alberta) is in the process of creating ANNUAL scholarships for DSD 1 and DSD 2 German language students worth $12,500.00 each. There may be multiple scholarships. This may turn into another big ‘reason’ for learning German in Alberta! Stay tuned for more updates.
As I shared before, for the first time ever, the German bilingual program is exhibited at the downtown Education Centre, right in the foyer. The CBE just hosted a French ambassador. This delegation looked at our exhibit and promptly took a photo with of all of them in front of it. Our work is going to France! So exciting! Alberta also has a new honorary German consul, Frau Ruth Schwab. Our grade 6 students will be writing their German A2 Language exams on May 22, 2025. Please ensure that they are not away on vacation/family trip that day! Danke!
If you wonder what some of the books are the students in Ms. Hickling’s and Ms. Tetz’s class will be reading this year, here is a list. Maybe, some of these would make great gifts, too.
- Bridge to Terabithia by Katherine Paterson
- City of Ember by Jeanne DuPrau
- The One and Only Ivan by Katherine Applegate
- The Wild Robot by Peter Brown
- MRS. FRISBY AND THE RATS OF NIMH by Robert C. O'Brien
POLAR: THE TITANIC BEAR by Daisy Corning Stone Spedden - Finders Keepers by Andrea Spalding
- Trapped in the Ice by Eric Walters
- THE PHANTOM TOLLBOOTH by Norton Juster
- Endling by Katherine Applegate
Speaking about books: Our Bookfair is returning, and we need volunteers!
Our Scholastic Book Fair event starts next week!
We can’t run the Book Fair, without amazing volunteers. We still have some openings on Thursday evening and Friday morning. The Book Fair will only be open during those times if we can fill those volunteer positions. If we don’t have the volunteers, the Book Fair will only be open for Math Night and during the day for the students on Wednesday and Thursday; it will not be open for interviews.

If we have the volunteers, the Book Fair will be open the following hours;
Tuesday 6pm - 7:30pm
Wednesday 9am - 4pm
Thursday 9am - 8pm
Friday 8am - 1pm
Classroom Scholastic visits - each classroom will have a 20 minute scheduled visit at the Book Fair. During this time, the students will browse the shelves of the Fair. They can sit and look their favourite books or make a purchase if they’d like. Please send money with your students on either Wednesday or Thursday; you will hear directly from your child's teacher, with how they will be handling that money and what day they will be attending the Book Fair.
A large percentage (Approx. 40%) of each purchase goes back to our school!
Warm regards,
Meike Thomsen, Principal
